Mark

Chapter 6 (Continued)

6:22`` And, when the daughter of Herodias herself entered
and danced, it pleased Herod and those who were dining with him.

And, the king said to the girl,
"Ask me at once whatever your heart might desire
and I will give it to you."

6:23``And he swore/'put himself under oath' to her,
"Whatever you ask me, I will give you . . .
{up} to the half my kingdom."

6:24``And, having gone out, she said to her mother,
"What should I ask for myself?"
Her mother said, "The head of John the Baptizer/Baptist."

6:25``And, having come immediately with haste to the king
she requested for herself saying,
"I desire that you give me at once on a platter {pinax}
the head of John the Baptizer/Baptist."

6:26``And, though the king
became 'exceedingly sorrowful'/'very grieved',
yet, because of his oath and because of
'those who were dining with him'/'his dinner guests'
he absolutely desired not {ouk} to frustrate/refuse {atheteo} her.

{Note: Herod knew for a king to break an oath was a terrible thing. He was between a rock and a hard place.}

6:27-28``And, immediately the king
having sent on a mission under his authority {apostello}
one of his bodyguards/
'attendants acting as an executioner' spekoulator},
ordered him at once to bring his {John's} head.

And, having gone off, he beheaded him {John} in prison 6:28``
and brought his {John's} head upon a platter
and gave it to the girl {korasion} . . .
and the girl gave it to her mother.

6:29``And, having heard, his {John's} students/disciples came
and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb {mnemeion}.

6:30``And the 'students gone off on a mission under Jesus' authority'
  {apostolos - means 'apostles' but they have not graduated to the
  high title yet - this is referring to the men Jesus sent out as
  missionaries - like in Mark 3:14}
gathered themselves together to Jesus
and brought back news to Him of all the things whatever they did
and whatever they taught.

{Note: During the period of our Lord's ministry, He was the Teacher and the disciples were his core students. It was not until after His resurrection that the disciples became the leading teachers with His delegated authority on earth - and then were designated Apostles. And, the Apostle to replace Judas Iscariot (not by man's vote, but by God's appointment) was Paul (name means 'little') - the littlest and latest became the greatest. Today we would have described what the disciples were doing here as 'student teaching' - On the Job training!}

6:31``And, He Jesus} says to them,
"Come here, as for you, yourselves,
into the privacy of a 'remote place'/'uninhabited place'
 and rest yourselves for a while."
(for there were those who were coming
and those who were going . . .
 many of them, and 'there was absolutely no time to eat'/
'not even did they have an opportune time to eat').

6:32``And they went off in the boat to the privacy {idios}
of a remote place.

{Note: Idios from which we get idiot, means privacy - to be by oneself. The origin of the word came from the democracy of Athens. Everyone was to cast a vote on all matters of the state. Anyone who would not participate in the democratic process was an 'idios'.}

{SideNote: A republic is a form of government that stays strong as long as the ruling class is strong. If the ones with a vested interest in the country fail, then the country fails. A democracy is a form of government that stays strong as long as the majority of ALL the people are strong. The problem comes when the non-vested loipoy vote to have their dole constantly increased, until that government can not afford to pay for itself. Next, the worst form of government is a tyrannical dictatorship. But, the best form of government is a benevolent dictatorship - as the Lord Jesus Christ will use to rule for 1000 years in the Millennium. This type of government is really only possible if the benevolent leader 'is without an old sin nature'/'or can control his old sin nature well through the intake of the Word'.}

6:33``And they saw them going away
and many 'fully understood'
  {epiginosko - means to fully recognize something for what it Truly is
  - to fully understand}
and on foot from all the cities they ran there with one another
and proceeded/'arrived there ahead of' them.

{Note: Epiginosko is a word that Paul uses quite often. He uses it to say to the Gnostics that 'they THINK that they understand' . . . but through the intake of the Word, we can Truly and fully understand all that God wants us to know about Him and His plan. So, here it probably means the crowd understood the reason the disciples were going off to themselves - but maybe it also means they are sheep and they 'fully understood' who their Shepherd was and are answering His 'call' (see the next verse - the analogy to a shepherd calling his sheep is used often in the Word) - see John 10:16 and following.}

6:34``And, having come out,
He {Jesus} saw a large crowd,
and He was 'moved with compassion' upon them {splagchnizomai},
because they were as sheep {probaton}
not having a shepherd {poimen}.
And He {Jesus} began teaching them many things.

{Note: Jesus recognized they were sheep needing a shepherd. So what did He do? Did He get them into 'programs'? Did He get them 'active in the Church?' Did He record their 'testimonies'? Did He ask them what they think they need? NO! They have to KNOW before they can DO! So, He taught them doctrine. That is what all baby sheep need - the nurturing care of a shepherd and the milk of the Word (later they will need sterner treatment also - that is covered in John 21:15 with this emphasis in 21:16.}

6:35-36``And, when 'it became late'/'the day was already far gone'
His {Jesus'} students/disciples came to Him and were saying,
"This is a wilderness place and it is already very late. 6:36``
'Dismiss them'/'Send them away' {command them}
in order that, having gone off to the neighboring farms and villages
they might purchase for themselves something that they might eat."

6:37``And, He {Jesus} 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai} saying to them,
"As for you, you give them to eat."

And they say to Him, "Having gone off,
shall we purchase two hundred denarii/'silver coins' worth of bread
and give it to them to eat?"

6:38``And He {Jesus} says to them,
"How much bread do you have? Go and see." {an order}
And, 'knowing from study' {ginosko}, they say,
"Five loaves and two fish."

6:39``And He {Jesus} commanded them
to 'make all recline' {anaklino} . . .
in 'open squares type rows of guests' {sumposion},
upon the green grass. 6:40``
And, they 'reclined at a dinner party' {anapipto}
"in squares/groups'
that looked like flower-garden plots" {prasia prasia }
by hundreds and fifties.

{Note: The Jewish dinner table was similar to the Romans. They would lie down on one elbow with their legs out. The table was like a 'squared off U' so the servants could walk in-between the guests and wait on them. Wuest says that apparently, as Peter (via Mark's writings here) looked out on the fields and saw the people in their colorful clothing and it reminded him of a flower garden with all it patches of squared off colors.}

6:41``And, having taken the five loaves and the two fish,
having looked/glanced up {anablepo} to heaven,
He {Jesus} invoked a blessing/'gave thanks'
and broke the bread.

And, kept on giving to the students/disciples
in order that they might continue setting them beside them,
and the two fish He divided to all.

6:42``And all ate and were satisfied {chortazo}.

6:43``And they took up twelve baskets
full of fragments/'leftover bread' and from the fish.

6:44``And those who had eaten the loaves
were five thousand 'noble men' {aner}.
  {this number does not include the woman and children who
  would have been many thousands more}

6:45``And, immediately, He {Jesus}
compelled His students/disciples
to go on board the boat
and precede Him to the other side,
to Bethsaida . . . while He dismissed the crowd.

6:46``And, having taken leave of them {apotassomai},
He {Jesus} went off into the mountain to pray.

6:47``And, evening having come,
the boat was in the middle of the sea,
and He Himself alone upon the land.

6:48``And, seeing them
constantly distressed/struggling {basanizo} in their rowing,
because the wind was against them,
'sometime between three and six in the morning'/
'about the fourth watch',
He {Jesus} comes face to face with them
walking on {epi} the sea.

And, He was desiring to go to their side.

{Note: Epi means on or by. When used with the genitive case, as it is here, it signifies 'contact'. Our Lord's sandals had actual contact with the water. From the reaction in the next verse, we can see this is correct.}

6:49``Moreover, having seen Him {Jesus}
walking directly upon the sea,
they supposed that it was
an apparition/phantom/ghost {phantasma} . . .
and they screamed/
'cried out from the depth of their throats' {anakrazo}!

6:50``For they all saw Him {His figure walking on the water}
and were terrified.

But immediately He {Jesus} spoke with them,
and He says to them, "'Have courage'/'be of good courage'!

It is I. Stop being afraid."

6:51``And, He {Jesus} went up face to face with them . . .
into the boat, and the wind 'ceased its violence' {kopazo}.

And, exceedingly beyond measure,
in themselves they were amazed/astonished {thaumazo} . . .6:52``
because they absolutely did not {ouk}
'put it together' {suniemi} . . . about the loaves . . .
  {they did not understand the ramifications of the miracle of the
  loaves and fish}
because . . . their heart/'right lobe'
was 'in a settled case of hardness/callousness'
  {poroo - a periphrastic perfect tense - hardened in the past with
  the result that their right lobes continued to be hard - the
  completed action might indicate that these students never did
  completely understand the meaning of the miracle of the loaves
  (periphrastic - 'a conjugation formed by the use of the simple verb
  with one or more auxiliaries'). }.

6:53``And, having crossed over,
they came to the land . . . at Gennesaret
and they cast off anchor off shore.

6:54-55``And, when they had gone out of the boat,
immediately, having 'come to fully know' {epiginosko} Him {Jesus}
they ran around throughout that whole countryside, 6:55``
and began to be carrying around on pallets/stretchers {krabbatos}
those who were afflicted,
where they were hearing that He was.

6:56``And wherever He {Jesus}
kept on entering . . .
into villages, towns, or the countryside . . .
they laid those who were sick in the marketplaces,
and they kept on begging Him {Jesus}
if they might touch the fringe of His cloak . . .
and as many as touched Him . . .
were being made whole {sozo}.
