Mark

Chapter 7

7:1``And there gather together to Him {Jesus}
the Pharisees and certain ones of the scribes/'experts in the law'
who come from Jerusalem.

7:2``And, having seen certain ones of His {Jesus'} students/disciples
that, with unclean/unhallowed hands . . . that is unwashed hands. . .
they were eating the loaves.

7:3``(For the Pharisees and all the Jews absolutely
do not {ouk} eat unless they perform a ritual washing,
'habitually keeping, carefully and faithfully' {krateo}
to the tradition of the elders {presbuteros}.)

7:4``And . . . from the marketplace,
except if {ean} they wash themselves
- maybe they will, maybe they will not {3rd class conditional if},
they absolutely do not {ouk} eat.

And, other things of the same order/category/kind {allos},
many of them there are which they received
for the purpose of
'habitually keeping, carefully and faithfully' {krateo} . . .
washing of cups and pots/'pint measures'
and kettles/'copper vessels'.

{Note: The phrase 'and tables' is not included in the best original texts (but it certainly would apply). The point is that the Jews of the day were 'religiously' keeping to their 'rituals' - the outer show of propriety - without understanding the spiritual significance of the rituals. Ritual without reality is meaningless. Many of the rituals of the Old Testament were pointing to the coming of the Messiah. Now He was there - but they rejected Him.}

7:5`` And they, the Pharisees and the scribes/'experts in the law'
keep on interrogating {eperotao} Him {Jesus},
"Why do your students/disciples
absolutely not {ouk} Walk
according to the tradition of the elders,
but, in contrast, eat their bread with unwashed hands?"

{Note: The teaching in the Old Testament was to 'Walk in the righteous Way of God' - not to have some human distort God's Way and then everyone else must Walk that way thereafter. Washing hands is fine and recommended for hygiene purposes. But today, it has no spiritual connotation. The Church Age is the age of little ritual - the Reality has come!}

7:6-8``And, He {Jesus} said to them,
"Excellently did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, you hypocrites/
'actors on the stage of life playing a role
of that which you are not' {hupokrites},
as it was written in the past with the result
that it stands written forever:
'This people is constantly honoring Me with their lips . . .
but their heart/'right lobe' is far from Me. 7:7``
but, in vain, they worship Me,
while they are teaching as doctrine . . .
'human commandments'/'commandments of men'.7:8``
Having abandoned the commandment of God,
you ' are habitually keeping, carefully and faithfully' {krateo}
'those things of men delivered to you
to be observed/'to human tradition'."

{Note: This tells us clearly that we must tie all doctrines we metabolize into our souls as Truth - to the Word of God and not the preaching of men - any man (Isaiah 28:10). But keep in mind, there are many Truths that are in the bible - such as the respect for authority (right or wrong). If you disagree with a pastor of a church - His 'potential mistake' is between HIM and his master - God. It is not your business so stay out of it. If it affects your spiritual growth, then QUIETLY move on to your right pastor teacher. If you can not accept the authority of the teacher, he is not your right teacher (you do not recognize the 'call of this shepherd' - find your own!}

7:9``And, He {Jesus} was saying to them,
"In a very beautiful way,
you are constantly making the commandment of God null and void
  {this means they are making the spiritual meaning of God's
  commandments meaninglessness upon meaninglessnesses in their
  own lives (as Solomon would say)}
in order 'that . . . that which has been delivered to you
for observance you may keep'/'to set up your own traditions'.

7:10``For Moses said,
" Honor/'Be paying due respect
and reverence to' your father and your mother
and, 'The one who is constantly reviling father or mother . . .
'must be put to death'/'let him come to an end by death'.'

7:11-12``But as for you, you are saying
  {example of a tradition that distorts God's Righteous Way}
that if {ean} a man should tell his father or mother
-maybe he will, maybe he will not {3rd class condition} -
'Corban/Korban . . . namely a gift {doron}{for God} . . .
whatever from me you may be profited . . . 7:12``
then no longer are you permitting him to do anything
for his father and his mother
  {which means he is not honoring and providing for his elderly
  parents as the Word says he should}.

{Note: Jesus is referring here to the 'corban gimmick'. From RBT's note at Matthew 15:5-6. Doron means gift. Here, in Mark 7:11, we see this gift is the Greek word 'korban' transliterated 'Corban'. It is taken from the Hebrew word charav {transliterated corban into Greek} and means sacrifice or gift, or to make something a sacrifice. It is used in Leviticus 1,2, & 3 as the Levitical offering brought to the alter. This word was taken out of its context by the religious crowd and given a broader meaning. They decided the way to raise money was an income tax gimmick and a way to not support family in need. A Jew would take his assets to a rabbi and for a fee, the estate becomes "korban" which means it would go to the temple {for a fee to the priest} and could still be used without paying taxes on it. So it was used as a means to get out of paying income taxes and taking care of elderly parents. This is NOT honoring to your parents!}

7:13``You are rendering void the authority of the Word of God . . .
by 'your tradition that you have handed down'.

And you are constantly doing many things of this kind."

7:14``And, having called to Himself again the crowd,
He was saying to them,
'Hear Me . . . all/everyone,
and understand/'put it all together mentally' {suniemi - an order}.

7:15``There is nothing/'not even one thing'
that from the outside of a person . . . entering into him
that 'is able'/'has the power to' 'defile him'/'make him unclean'.

Rather, the things proceeding out from the man . . .
are those that 'defile the man'/make the man unclean'."

{Note: Principal: YOU . . . the real YOU . . . is what you think - see Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinks in his right lobe {heart} . . . so is he!" Next, go to the corrected translation of Proverbs Chapter 8 - it is important and fabulous! The objective in life is to replace your human thinking with the divine viewpoint of the Word of God. Then what comes out of you will be as 'clean' as a human can get (Jesus Christ being the absolute standard!).}

7:16: {Note: The better texts do not have this verse here, "He who has ears to be hearing . . . let him be hearing!" (idiom: meaning 'everyone' needs to 'hear, listen, concentrate, and obey (shama` in the Hebrew)!) But it certainly would apply if it were here.}

7:17``And, when He {Jesus} entered into the house,
His students/disciples went to asking Him about the parable.

7:18-19``And, He {Jesus} says to them,
"In this manner, also, as for you,
are you 'unable to put it together mentally'/
'without understanding' {asunetos}?

Do you absolutely not {ouk} perceive/know {noeo}
that everything which from the outside enters into the man
is absolutely 'not able'/'does not have the power' {dunamai}
to defile him . . . 7:19``
because it absolutely does not {ouk}
enter his heart/'right lobe {the thinking part of the soul}
but, in contrast . . . {food enters into} his stomach/belly {koilia}
and then goes out into the toilet/sewer {aphedron} . . .
making all the foods clean/
'free from the defilement of sin' {katharizo}."
  {this means that no food makes you 'spiritually unclean'}

7:20-21``And, He {Jesus} was saying,
"That which is constantly proceeding out of the man,
that thing defiles the man. 7:21``
For from within . . .
out of the human heart/'right lobe' {human viewpoint thinking}
are constantly proceeding the evil {kakos} ideas/thoughts:

'sex in connection with religion'/fornication
  {porneia - example of basic immorality},

theft {klope - the example here is the kind without violence},

murder {phonos - the ultimate in the depravation of another's right
  to freedom - his life}, 7:22``

adulteries
  {moicheia - depriving a man of the exclusive relationship with his
  wife - another law of establishment},

greed/covetousness/perniciousness/lusts {pleonexia},

'evil devising'/'evil plotting type sins
against others (mental attitude sins)' {poneria},

deceit {dolos},

'unbridled lust'/lasciviousness {aselgeia},

'an evil eye'
  {idiom for 'thinking evil' of many categories - mental attitude sins -
  wishing someone hurt, plotting revolution, gossip (true or not),
  slander, etc.},

slander/blasphemy {blasphemia - slander a human or blasphemy the
  Person of God},

pride/arrogance {huperephania},

and folly/foolishness/recklessness {aphrosune}.

7:23``All these 'evil/bad things' {poneros}
from within are constantly proceeding
and are constantly defiling the man."

{There is a Place For Gentiles in the Plan of God for the Messiah}
7:24``But from there, having arisen
  {anistemi - won't be the last time! - here just means to get up},
He {Jesus} went off into the region of Tyre.

And, having entered into a house,
He was desiring that absolutely not {ouk} even one should know,
but it was impossible to be hidden/'escape notice' {lanthano}.

{Note: Sidon is not mentioned in the better texts but it is in the same area.}

7:25``Indeed/But immediately, a woman,
having heard about Him {Jesus}
whose daughter had an unclean spirit
having come . . . fell at His feet.

7:26~~The woman was a Greek
  {Hellenis - Greek - here her 'religion' - used to worshipp the Greek
  Gods} . . .
of Syrophoenician {Surophoinissa} by race/origin {genos}
  {means Syrian was her language and she was Phoenician by race}.

And, she kept on beseeching Him
to cast out the demon {daimonion} out of her daughter {thugater}.

7:27``And, He {Jesus} was saying to her,
"Let first the children be fed/satisfied . . .
for it is absolutely not {ouk} right
to take the bread of the children {teknon}
and to throw it to the 'little dogs' {kunarion}."

{Note: Jesus was always careful to remind us that He came first to the Jew . . . and then to the Gentile. So, though He took pity on the woman, His first priority, as the Messiah, was to the Jew. SideNote: Wuest says this lady might have known that the Jews called Gentiles kuon or 'dog' in a derogatory fashion. So, Jesus used kunarion instead.}

7:28`` She 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of herself' {apokrinomai} and says to Him,
"Yes, Lord {indicating she is a believer in Him} . . .
yet the little dogs under the table are constantly eating
from the little morsels of the 'little children' {paidion}."

7:29`` Then he said to her,
"Because of this Word {logos - singular}
  {logos - she accepted Him as her Lord and Savior - as a believer,
  He granted her request},
go . . . the demon has gone out of your daughter -
in the past with results that last forever
  {exerchomai - perfect tense}."

7:30``And, having gone off into her home,
she found the little child lying quietly upon her couch/bed . . .
and the demon gone out.

{Healing a Deaf Mute}
7:31``And, again having gone out of the region of Tyre,
He {Jesus} went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
in the midst of the regions of Decapolis.

7:32``And, they brought to Him {Jesus}
one who was deaf,
and spoke with difficulty/'had a speech impediment' {mogilalos}
and they beg Him to place upon him His hands.

7:33``And, having taken him {the deaf man}
away from the crowd,
He {Jesus} put His fingers into his ears,
and having spit, He touched his tongue.

7:34``And, having looked up into heaven,
He {Jesus} groaned, and says to him,
"Ephphatha . . . which is . . . "Be opened".

7:35``And his {the deaf man's} ears were opened . . .
and immediately that which bound his tongue was loosed,
and he began to speak rightly/plainly.

7:36``And He {Jesus} in His own interest,
commanded them {diastellomai}
to be saying not even one thing.

But the more He kept on commanding them,
they themselves kept on proclaiming it publicly
so much the more to a greater degree.

7:37``And, they were completely astounded/flabbergasted saying
"He {Jesus} has done all things well . . .
He makes both the deaf to be hearing . . .
and the mute/dumb to be speaking."
