I Thessalonians

Chapter 4 (Continued)
[Change of Subject - Should be a New Chapter Here]
[Doctrine of Life After Death for Believers in Christ]
13~~Now [de]
I do absolutely not desire/wish you to be ignorant, brethren,
[thelo ouk humas agnoeo (present active infinitive) adelphos
(in Biblical terms "ignorant" means to be absent of "Divine
Viewpoint" on any matter of life)]
concerning those receiving sleep with results that last forever
  [peri koimao (perfect passive participle)]
for the purpose that you may not receive sorrow . . .
[hina me lupeo (present passive subjunctive)]
even/and just as others
  [kai kathos loipoy]
who are having no hope/'absolute confidence'.
[o echo (present active participle) me elpis]

[Note: Ignorance can come from lack of teaching or from a lack of listening. Here Paul is emphasizing his own responsibility to teach - if any believer remains "ignorant" of any doctrine it should be their own fault and not that of a communicator of the Word who is not doing his job to study and teach. The Doctrine in view is that of life after death. Doctrine IS reality. When you truly understand this, then "elpis" moves from "hope" to "absolute confidence" - "I know this is true with no doubt at all because the Bible says it is so."]

[Note: It is ok to grieve the death of a believer, but a follower of the doctrines of Christ understand that we will see our loved ones (believers) again and we should not grieve their "short term absence" as if we will never see them again!]

[Note: To unbelievers, elpis means "hope" as in "I hope so". Very weak. Paul explains though for believers elpis takes on a different meaning. It means "absolute confidence". Doctrine IS reality - see Hebrews 11:1.]

14~~For . . . [gar]
If - and it is true -
[ei - 1st class conditional if]
we believe that Jesus
[pisteuo (present active indicative) hoti Iesous]
died
  [apothnesko (aorist active indicative)]
and rose again
  [kai anistemi (aorist active indicative)]
even so also/and those receiving sleep
[houto kai koimao (aorist passive participle)]
"by means of"/through Jesus
  [dia Iesous]
will God bring with Him.
[ago (future active indicative) Theos sun autos]

[Note: It is the resurrection that gives the efficacy (to make meaningful or effective) to his death! Lots of people die, but only Christ died, was resuscitated, and NEVER died again = resurrection.]

15~~For this we say [to] you
[gar touto lego (present active indicative) humin]
in/by/with/"in the sphere of" the Word of the Lord . . .
  [en logos kurios]
that we who are living
[hoti hemeis ho zao (present active participle)]
remaining/"receiving surviving"
  [perileipo (present passive participle)]
toward/unto the coming of the Lord {rapture} . . .
  [eis parousia kurios]
shall absolutely not, no way, possibly come before
  [phthano (aorist active subjunctive)
ou me (very strong double negative)]
who are caused to be sleeping.
  [o koimao (aorist passive participle)]

[Note: Wonderful verse here for sure. We who are alive today need not fear. A promise has been made that we will be with the Lord at the rapture of the Church. And, this applies if we are alive at that time or "sleeping". And, the dead in Christ will rise first (amplified at the end of the next verse).]

16a~~For/that/because the Lord Himself shall descend
[hoti kurios autos katabaino (future middle indicative)]
from the ultimate source of heaven
  [apo ouranos]
in/by/with a "shout"/"a stimulating cry"/"a command"
  [en keleuma]
in/by/with the voice of the archangel
  [en phone archaggelos]
and in/by/with the trump of God.
  [kai salpigx theos]

16b~~And the dead in/by/with Christ shall rise first.
[kai nekros en Christos anistemi (future middle indicative) proton]

17a~~Thereafter we who are living . . .
[epeita hemeis o zao (present active participle)]
remaining/"receiving surviving"
  [perileipo (present passive participle)]
shall be "snatched away"/"carried away
  [harpazo (future passive indicative)]
together with them in/by/with the clouds . . .
  [hama sun autos en nephele]
to meet the Lord toward the air.
  [eis apantesis kurios eis aer]

17b~~And so shall we ever be with the Lord.
[kai houto esomai (future indicative) pantote sun kurios]

[Note: Please keep in mind that Jesus is NOT returning to the Earth here. We go up to meet Him in the air. It will be another 7 years of Tribulation before the Second Advent of Christ occurs. During those 7 years, the "bride" (Church Age believers in Christ) are being prepared for the "bridegroom" (Jesus Christ).

In Philippians 2:10 we see that each will take One knee and bow to Christ. See also I Corinthians 1:7.]

18~~Therefore/"so then" . . . [hoste]
comfort/encourage
[parakaleo (present active imperative (this is an order!))]
one another of the same kind [allelon]
in/by/with these words.
  [en toutois logos]

[Note: Use your doctrine in your soul and this specific promise of God to comfort those who have lost loved ones.]
