Chapter 13
{End of the Public Ministry of Jesus Christ and Message for Disciples}
{Washing the Disciples' Feet}
1~~Just before the Passover feast
  {Tuesday night before Jesus' death the next day - 30 AD},
Jesus {His Humanity in view} knew
that his time had come to depart from this world
face to face with the Father
  {His Spirit went to the Father, His soul to Paradise with God the Holy Spirit, and His body into the grave} . . .
having loved {agapao} His own {His sheep - His disciples in view}who were in the world,
and now He loved {agapao} them to the end.

2~~ The 'evening meal'/supper was beginning . . .
the devil having now cast/thrown into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, that he might betray Him {Jesus}.

{Note: We will find in a few verses that Judas at this point for sure is an unbeliever. As an unbeliever, Satan possessed him or greatly influenced his thinking. RBT says that this also means that Satan was literally in attendance at this dinner. He also wanted to hear about the mysteries of the Church Age.}

{Note: Satan's great purpose has been to keep Jesus Christ as the Messiah from coming to the cross to bear the sins of the world. If he can get Judas to betray Jesus to the Jews, he hopes that Jesus will be stoned to death and NOT make it to the cross. This also will fail!}

3~~Jesus, knowing {oida - knowledge in the frontal lobe of the soul}
that the Father had delivered all things into His hands
and that He {Jesus} has come from the ultimate source of God
and was going face to face with God,

4~~He {Jesus} raised Himself up {egeiro} from the supper,
removed His outer clothes {His robe},
took a towel and tied it around Himself {like an apron}.

{Note: This is a picture of Jesus Christ assuming the position of a servant so that all of us may become servants of God. 'The servant of all . . . is the greatest of all' - Jesus Christ.}

{Note: Egeiro is the word for rising up. It is the same verb used when Jesus was raised up from the grave.}

{Service of the Lord Jesus Christ}
5~~Then, He tossed water {water is analogous to the Word}
into the washbasin
and began to wash {nipto} the disciples' feet
and to dry them with the towel
He had wrapped around Himself.

{Note: In Luke we find that the Disciples were disputing among themselves 'who was the greatest of them' when they arrived at the dinner. Apparently they had not washed each other's feet probably trying to show each other 'they' were the greatest. So, now they have the excrement and dirt from the street on their feet. The filth is a picture of sin. Washing their feet is a picture of I John 1:9 (rebound). Jesus is the means of removing all filth/sin from mankind. Nipto means to 'wash only a part' of the body not the whole body. This is rebound. You confess your sins and your sins are forgiven. Louo is the word for washing the whole body. It is used in verse 10 following. Taking a bath is a picture of salvation. Once you are saved, you do not need another 'full bath' - once saved always saved'. But after salvation, you sin and need to 'nipto' the sin away. See also I Corinthians 6 particularly verse11.]

6~~ Then He {Jesus} came face to face with Simon Peter
and Peter said to Him,
"Lord, You are absolutely NOT {ouk - strong negative}
going to wash my feet!"

{Note: Peter is shocked and most likely pulling back his feet from Jesus. He does not want the God Man to wash his feet! And, he misses the doctrinal point being made by Jesus as Jesus will make clear to Peter in the next few verses.}

7~~ Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai} and said,
"You do not understand what I am doing now
 {you are ignorant of the doctrinal implications},
but you will understand after these things."

{Note: The word answered is 'apokrinomai'. It is a compound
verb . . . a preposition from the ultimate source . . . giving a discerning answer based on knowledge. Krino means: 'to judge'. Krinomai means: 'to be discerning in an answer'. Thus, the full meaning of 'apokrinomai' is: "to give a discerning answer from the ultimate source of ones self."}

8~~Peter said to Him {Jesus},
"You will NEVER . . . NO not EVER {ouk me}
wash {nipto} my feet!"
Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of Himself' {apokrinomai},
"If I do not wash {nipto} you,
- maybe you will let Me, maybe you will not let Me -
you have no share/partnership/association with Me."

{Note: Ouk and me are two negatives in the Greek. A double negative in the Greek is a very strong negative. This is very strong here. Jesus recognizes the free will of Peter to refuse His service, but as long as Peter refuses, Jesus cannot have fellowship with him. Again, a picture of rebound. Once we rebound, our filth is removed; we are back in fellowship and filled with God the Holy Spirit.}

9~~Simon Peter said to Him,
"Lord . . . {wash} not only my feet,
but also my hands and my head!"

{Note: If washing his feet gives him a share of what the Lord has and is . . . well ok . . . wash even more of me, Peter says - still not understanding the doctrine of rebound.}

10~~ Jesus said unto him,
"The one who has bathed {louo - full body bath - salvation}
needs only to wash his feet {nipto - rebound - I John 1:9},
and is completely clean.
And you disciples are clean . . . but not every one of you."

{Note: Louo is the fully body bath. It is a picture of salvation. Once saved, you can not 'be resaved again'. Well you can bath over and over if you do not understand the doctrine of eternal salvation, but all you really need Peter is to rebound (wash your feet) once you are saved. But Judas is unsaved and he needs a full bath! (accept Christ as his savior).}

11~~ (For the reason that
Jesus knew the one who was going to betray him.
Therefore He said, "Not every one of you is clean.")

12~~So after Jesus had washed {nipto} their feet
and had received {lambano} His outer garments {robe},
He was seated above {anapipto}
and said to them,
"Have you learned by observation {ginosko}
what I have done for you
- in the past with results that last forever -
for your advantage?

{Note: Receiving back His robe is a picture of His receiving His resurrection body after the cross and three days in the ground.}

{Note: Oida is 'to have doctrine/knowledge in the frontal lobe. Ginosko is to 'learn from observation or study.}

13~~"You keep on calling {phoneo - to utter sound} Me
'Teacher/Master' {didaskalos} and 'Lord/Deity {kurios}',
and, do so honorably {kalos},
for I keep on being {these}."

{Note: Phoneo here indicates they 'call Him with the title of' - rank. Didaskalos means a person who teaches in a public assembly - dogmatically and with authority. Kurios is the Greek word for deity.}

{Note kalos means good, fine, well, with honor. Here is the concept of honor. Jesus teaches with authority. To recognize and respect the authority of your teacher is to act with honor.}

14-15~~"If I then . . . {your} Lord and Teacher {high rank}
- and I am -
have washed {nipto} your feet,
you too 'have a responsibility'/ought
to wash one another's feet 15~~
for I {Jesus} have given you an example.
You should do just as I have done for you."

{Note: RBT says the key here is 'example'. Jesus is not saying that 'feet washing' is an authorized ritual of the Church Age. Instead, He is saying use rebound . . . teach rebound to others. Teach using common practices of your day or however else you can to get the doctrine across. It is the MEANING of the example, not the literal setting of the example that is important.}

{Humble Attitude - Washing Feet does not Detract from His Authority}
16~~'Verily Verily'/'Point of Doctrine' {Amen Amen},
I {Jesus} say {lego} to you,
"The slave/servant {doulos} is not greater than his Lord/Deity,
nor is the one who is sent as a messenger
greater than the one who sent him."

{Note: Amen is a transliteration of the Hebrew amen. It means 'I believe it'. To double the word means I REALLY mean this! So this is a fact! This is a point of doctrine.}

{Note: Doulos is the Greek word for slave. It also was used for a servant. But, once you are a believer, we are slaves of the perfect Master - the Lord Jesus Christ. Here it is used for the disciples.}

17~~"If you know {oida} these things
-and you do -
happinesses/blessednesses {makarios}
'belong to you'/'do you keep on being' . . .
if you do them
-maybe you will, maybe you will not."

{Note: Oida means to have the doctrine metabolized in your frame of reference. So if you have doctrine resident in your soul, then you can share the happinesses of God.}

The Announcement of Jesus' Betrayal 18~~ "I speak {lego} concerning all of you.
I know {oida} the ones I have chosen.
But this is so the scripture may receive fulfillment,
'The one who 'crunches/'eats rudely' {trogo} My bread
'has turned against Me'/'seeks to overthrow His authority'
  {idiom - literally is 'has lifted up his heel against me'.}"

{Note: Trogo is the Greek word meaning to NOT eat politely. Instead it means to eat greedily and 'crunch' your food. Judas had a number of faults. This was just another.}

19~~"I {Jesus} am telling you this now/'at the present moment',
before it happens/'comes to pass',
for the purpose that when it happens
you may keep on believing
that I keep on being {He}.

{Authority for Communicators of Doctrine}
20~~" 'Point of doctrine'/'verily, verily' {amen amen}
whoever 'keeps on receiving'/accepts the one I send
'keeps on receiving'/accepts Me,
and whoever 'keeps on receiving'/accepts Me
'keeps on receiving'/accepts the one Who sent Me."

{Note: RBT says this verse applies mainly to apostles, pastor-teachers, and evangelists - all of whom have communication type spiritual gifts. Jesus declares that they are given authority over the Church by being His representatives on Earth.}

{Verses 21-30: Removal of Judas Iscariot}
{Announcement of the Traitor}
21~~ When Jesus had said these things,
He was greatly distressed in spirit
  {legitimately worried over one He had authority over}
and testified/witnessed,
"'Point of doctrine'/'verily, verily' {amen amen},
one of you will betray Me."

{Verses 22-25: Disciples React}
22~~ Then the disciples
kept on quickly glancing {blepo} at one another,
'at a total loss' {aporeo} which of them concerning whom He spoke.

{Note: They are stealing glances at each other. Could it be him or him or him? RBT says probably only John ('disciple of love') and Judas (treasurer, smart, probably good looking, 'devoutly religious' type) were not considered possible traitors by the others.}

{Note: Aporeo means several things. It means to be without means; to be perplexed; or to be at a mental loss.}

23~~ Now there kept on being
- reclining on the 'garment covering the chest' {kolpos} of Jesus -
one of His disciples that He loved {agapao}

{Note: They ate Roman style. They laid out next to each other leaning on their left elbow and ate with their right hands. Jesus was sitting up - position of honor - and this disciple was to the right of Jesus. Now, as Jesus was sitting, His outer garment would hang down and this disciple had his head either on that garment or literally on the chest of Jesus. Kolpos is used either for the breast or the garment covering the breast. More likely it was the garment so Jesus could eat!}

{Note: This disciple is on the right hand side of Jesus which is also a position of honor. RBT says this is actually the author of this book himself - John - the 'disciple of agape/love'. Agape love is a mental attitude love. Free from all mental attitude sins. It is an impersonal love based on who and what YOU are, not the characteristics of the object you 'love'.}

24~~ So Simon Peter kept on gesturing {neuo}
to this disciple {John}
to ask {Jesus} who it was He was referring to.

{Note: neuo is the Greek Word for gesturing to Him. RBT says Peter is trying to get John's attention with the Master seeing him do it! Maybe hand gestures - ask Him, ask Him, who is it? Who is it? Type thing!}

25~~He {John} then
- having leaned back on the 'garment on the chest'
of Jesus {probably to whisper the question} -
asked Him, "Lord, who does it keep on being?"

26~~ Jesus 'had an answer'/'gave a discerning answer
from the ultimate source of himself' {apokrinomai},
"He, it keeps on being,
to whom I will give this 'psomion'/'special piece of bread/meat'
after I have dipped it in the dish {tasty sauce}."
Then when He had dipped the psomion in the dish
He gave it to Judas Iscariot . . . {the son} of Simon.

{Note: Psomion is translated sop in the KJV. This was a special piece of meat or bread that was given to the honored person at the party. This was given to Jesus. Now as the honored person, He could honor someone else by giving the psomion to that person. This is a picture of the last great grace offer of salvation to Judas. Jesus is honoring him by giving him the psomion. Judas will accept the psomion but continue to reject His Person.}
