Job

Chapter 15
{Chapters 15-21: The Second Debate}
{Chapters 15-17: Second Debate with Eliphaz}

1-2~~Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied and said, 2~~
"Would a wise man answer with empty notions,
and fill his belly with the {hot} east wind?

3~~Would he argue with useless words?

Or with speeches that have no value?

{Eliphaz's Self-Righteous Statements Continue}
4~~But you {Job} even undermine piety.
You hinder devotion to God/'El.

5~~Your sin prompts your mouth.

You adopt the tongue of the crafty.

6~~Your own mouth condemn you, not mine.

Your own lips testify against you.

{Note: Eliphaz still judges Job as sinful. He transfers to Job his very own sins and evil.}

7~~Are you the first man that was ever born?
  {Idiom of ancient world meaning are you the most important man in
  the entire world? and actually here, in chapter 1 we learned that
  God said Job IS!}

Were you brought forth before the hills?

8~~Do you listen in on God's/'Elowahh's counsel?

Do you limit your wisdom to yourself?

9~~What do you know that we know not?

What insights do you have that is not in us?

{Note: You can always tell what an arrogant person is thinking. They accuse you of what is going on in THEIR mind! Eliphaz has inordinate ambition.}

10~~The gray-haired and the aged are on our side . . .
men even older than your father.

{Note: This myth goes back 4000 years - that all older people are smarter than younger people. Sometimes it is true, but often times it is not true.}

11~~Are God's/'El's consolations not enough for you . . .
words spoken gently to you?

12-13~~Why has your heart/'right lobe' carried you away?

And why do your eyes flash 13~~
so that you 'venture rage'/'turn your spirit' {ruwach}
against God/'El,
and pour out such words from your mouth?

14~~What is man, that he could be pure?

Or one born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15-16~~If He {God} puts no trust in the Holy Ones {angels}
and if even the heavens are not pure/clean in His sight, 16~~
how much less man who is vile and corrupt . . .
who drinks up evil like water?

{Note: Hebrews 9:23 Says the Blood of Christ Cleansed Heaven}

17~~Listen to me and I {Eliphaz} will explain it to you {Job}.
Let me tell you what I have seen.

18~~What wise men have declared, hiding nothing
received from their fathers.

19~~To whom alone the land was given,
when no alien/stranger passed among them.

{Eliphaz Implies that Job is a Wicked Man}
20-21~~All of his days, the wicked man suffers torment.

The ruthless . . . through all his years stored up for him 21~~
terrifying sounds fill his ears.

When all seems well, marauders attack him
  {referring to the attack on Job when he was doing so well}.

22``He is caused not to believe,
having returned out of darkness,
he watches for the sword.

23~~He wanders about . . . food {for a vulture}.

He knows that the day of darkness is at hand
  {referring to having the sin unto death administered}.

24-26~~Distress and anger fill him with terror.

They overwhelm him like a king
poised to attack/'ready to the battle' 25~~
because he shakes his fist at God/'El
and 'shows himself mighty' against the Almighty . . . 26~~
defiantly charging Him with a thick strong shield.

27~~Though his face is covered with fat
  {idiom meaning he is very prosperous}
and his waist bulges with flesh.

{Note: One of the visible signs of prosperity in the ancient world was 'fat'. Fat was beautiful!}

{Saying He will Live in a Ghost Town}
28~~He will inhabit {shakan} ruined towns
and in desolate cities, and in houses where no one lives . . .
houses crumbling to rubble.

29~~He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,
nor will his possessions spread over the land.

30~~He will not escape the darkness.

A flame will wither his shoots,
and the breath/spirit of His {God's} mouth will carry him away.

31~~Let him not deceive himself by trusting in what is worthless.

For he will get nothing in return.

32~~Before his time, he will be paid in full
and his branches will not flourish
  {alluding to Job's poem about trees - Job was saying he was a tree
  with a lot of Water of the Word - that he was a mature believer -
  and Eliphaz is disputing that}.

33~~He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes . . .
like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.

34~~For the company of the godless will be barren
and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes
  {Eliphaz is trying to ask in a sideways fashion - 'Job did you use
  your money to bribe people? Is that why God is disciplining
  you?'}.

35~~They conceive trouble
and give birth to evil.

Their womb fashions deceit."
