Job

Chapter 16
{Chapters 15-21: The Second Debate}
{Chapters 15-17: Second Debate with Eliphaz continues
  with Job's Response}
1-2~~Then Job answered and said, 2~~
" I have heard many things like these.

Miserable comforters . . . all of you.

3~~Will your long winded speeches never end?

What ails you that you keep on arguing?

4~~I also could speak like that if you were in my place
  {Idiom: literally: 'if your soul were in my soul's place'}.

I could make fine speeches against you
and shake my head at you.

{Job Says if Our Situation was Reversed - I would comfort you}
5~~But, instead, my mouth would encourage you.

Comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

6~~Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved/assuaged.

And if I refrain from speaking, my pain does not go away.

{Verses 7-9: Job Recognizes that His Pain was Permitted By God}
7~~Surely He {oh God} has worn me out.

You have devastated my entire household.

8~~You have bound me.

And, it has become a witness against me.

My gauntness rises up and testifies against me.

9~~He {God} assails me and tears me up in His anger.

He gnashes His teeth at me.

My opponents fasten on me His piercing eyes
  {meaning God is with my enemies - the 'former friends to whom Job
  is addressing}.

{Retrospection back Before His Wife told Job to Curse God and Die}
10~~Men open their mouths to jeer me
  {we will find out that these were people to whom Job had shown
  kindness - he had helped them}.

They struck me on my cheek in scorn {slapped Job}.

They have united together against me.

11~~God/'El has turned me over to evil men { `aviyl}.

An thrown me into the clutches of the wicked.

12~~All was well with me {Job}.

But shattered me.

He seized me by the neck and He crushed me.

He made me His target.

13~~His archers surrounded me.

Without pity, He pierced my kidneys.

And, He spills my gall upon the ground.

14~~Again and again, He bursts upon me.

He rushes on me like a warrior.

15~~I have sewed sackcloth over my skin
  {the ulcers were so horrible, Job covered them in sackcloth}.

I have buried my brow in the dust.

16~~My face is red with weeping.

Deep shadows ring my eyes.

17~~Yet my hands have been free from violence
  {as a mature believer, Job did not try to solve his personal problems
  with violence}.

And my prayer is pure
  {like Paul after him, Job prayed to have his 'thorns in the flesh'
  taken away and both examples showed us that these are
  erroneous prayers and not the solution (the solution is remember
  'My Grace is sufficient for you')}.

18~~ O earth, do not cover my blood.

May my cry never be laid to rest.

{Note: This is an important doctrine - in crime always remember the victim not the criminal. He is saying - he is the victim - he has been abused and maligned. Job is the victim.}

19~~Even now, my attorney {`ed} is in heaven.

My solicitor {sahed} is On High.

{Note: In the court room of heaven, Satan (word means 'the accuser ') is accusing us as sinners before God. Jesus Christ is our defense attorney. After the cross, He counters with, yes he sinned but that sin was judged on the cross. Law of double jeopardy says a sin can not be judged twice.}

20~~My intercessor is my friend.

As my eyes pour out tears to God/'Elowahh.

21~~On behalf of man,

He {the intercessor} pleads with God/'Elowahh
as a man pleads with his friend.

22``When a few years are come,
then I {Job} shall go the way where I shall not return
  {Job recognizes he too will pass away}.
