Job

Chapter 30
{Chapters 22-31: The Third Debate}
{Chapters 25-31: Third Debate with Bildad}

{Verses 1-10: Mockery of the Younger Generation}
1~~"But now, they who are younger than I ridicule me . . .
whose fathers I would have disdained to have put
with my sheepdogs/'the dogs of my flock'.

2~~Or what use was the strength of their hands for me,
since their vigor was gone from them?

3~~Haggard for want and hunger,
they {the fathers of those scorning him}
roamed alone in the parched land
and desolate wastelands in the night.

4~~In the brush, they gathered salt herbs
and their food was the 'root of the broom tree'/'juniper roots'
  {a very ancient proverb is if you eat of the root of the broom tree
  you are a shiftless, no-good so-in-so}.

5-6~~They were banished from their fellow men.

Shouted at as if they were thieves . . . 6~~
they were forced to live in dry streams
among the rocks
and the holes in the ground.

7~~They brayed among the bushes
and huddled in the under-brush.

8~~Abase and nameless fools . . .
they were driven out of the land.

9~~And now, their sons mock me in song!

I {Job} have become a byword among them.

10~~They detest me and keep their distance.

They do not hesitate, however, to run up and spit in my face.

{Verses 11-19: Unrelenting Persecution of Job Under Evidence
  Testing}
11~~Now that He {God} has unstrung my bow and afflicted me,
they throw off restraint/'the bridle' in my presence.

{Note: This is an archery analogy. The strung bow takes power to pull back and shoot the arrow. Now Job is too week to pull back the bow.}

12~~On my right, the tribe attacks.

They lay snares for my feet.

They build their siege rams against me.

13~~They break up my roads.

They succeed in destroying me without anyone coming to my aid.

14~~They advance as through a gaping breach/
'a wide break in waters'.

Amid the ruins, they come rolling in.

15~~Terrors overwhelm me.

My dignity/honor has been blown away like the wind.

My safety/prosperity vanishes like a cloud.

16~~And now my life/soul ebbs away.

The days of affliction have taken hold on me.

17~~Night pierces my bones
  {this is when cold just seems to go to your very bones}.

My gnawing pains never rest.

18~~In His great power, He {God} becomes like clothing to me.

He binds me like the neck of my garment
  {in these days they grab your garment around your neck and
  throw you to the ground the mechanics are still similar today}.

{Note: Job is still in his 'blaming God for his suffering' mode.}

19~~He throws me in the mud.

And, I am reduced to dust and ashes.

{Verses 20-23: Prayer is not the Answer to Evidence Testing - (Applying the Doctrine in your Soul is the Answer)}

20~~I {Job} cry unto You {Oh God} . . . but You do not answer me.

I stand up . . . but 'You merely look at me'/'do not see me'.

{Note: This is similar to Paul's thorn in the flesh prayer for the suffering to be taken away. But God responded to Paul 'My grace . . . sufficient for you!'}

21~~You turn on me ruthlessly.

With the might of your hand, You attack me.

22~~You snatch me up.

And drive me before the wind.

You toss me around as in a storm/hurricane.

23~~I know that you will take me down to death . . .
to the place appointed for all the living.

{Note: Job is a believer. He knows that when he dies physically, his soul is not going to die.}

{Verses 24-31: Autobiography of Evidence Testing}
24~~Surely no one lays a hand on a broken man
when he cries for help in his distress?

{Note: Now Job is looking in the mirror - HE would not! But his friends have proven that THEY would! Don't let anything that anyone does shock you. 'Cursed in the man who puts his trust in man'. ALL men are born with old sin natures (those who are born of a human father anyway). Stay anchored to the Word and be leery of any human viewpoint. This includes friends, family, newspapers, leaders, pastors, on and on. Stay with the Word.}

25~~Have I not wept for those in trouble?
  {yes, Job YOU did! But that is not your three friends or the mob
  who spit on you!}

Has not my soul grieved for the poor/needy?
  {Yes, but remember your friends said you did not! They are looking
  in their own mirror and ascribing to Job how they dealt with the
  needy!}

26~~When I looked for good, then evil came unto me.

And when I waited for light, there came darkness.

27~~The churning inside never stops
  {Job has had it - he is ready to have a nervous breakdown}.

Days of suffering confront me.

28~~I go about blackened . . . but not by the sun
  {Job has a terrible skin disease - the skin is beginning to rot}

I stand up in the 'assembly of believers' and 'call for help'.

29~~I have become a brother of the coyotes
  {means that the congregation told him to get out - he belongs out
  with the coyotes}.

And a companion to owls
  {means that owls are awake at night and Job is getting no sleep}.

30~~My skin grows black upon me and peals.

My body/bones burn with fever.

31~~My harp is turned to mourning
  {Job is not a musician, but he is a poet. The 'music' he is tuned to
  play is 'I am going to die' - that is all he things about.}.

And my flute . . . the sound of wailing."
