I
Corinthians
Chapter
2
[See
Chapter 1, Verse 20 for 3 Key questions]
[Question:
"Where is the professional debater?" Answered in 1-8]
1~~
"And I", [kago]
brethren,
"coming
at various points of times"
[erchomai - aorist active participle]
face
to face with you [pros humas]
I
came
[erchomai - aorist active indicative]
absolutely
not [ouk]
according
to the standard [kata]
of
excellency/superiority [huperoche]
of
speech
{not superior oratory technique}
or
[e]
"wisdom"
[sophia - has to be human viewpoint type since Paul
did come with "Divine Viewpoint" type wisdom]
{not with superior rhetoric as a philosopher} . . .
declaring/"making
known"
[kataggello - an in a negative sense means "betray"
but that is obviously not the meaning here]
unto
you the testimony/witness [marturion]
of
God. [Theos]
{Note:
This verse means no gimmicks, Paul just gave the gospel.}
2~~
For [gar]
I
determined/decided [krino]
absolutely
not [ouk]
to
know/"perceive with my senses"
with
results that last forever
[eido - perfect active infinitive]
anything
[tis]
in/by/with/among
[en] you . . .
except/"if
not" [ei me]
Jesus
Christ . . .
and
[kai]
Him
receiving crucifixion in the past with results
that
last forever
[touton stauroo - perfect passive participle]
3~~And
[kai]
I
[ego]
"was
myself becoming what I was not before"
[ginomai - aorist middle indicative]
face
to face with you [pros humas]
in/by/with
[en]
infirmity/weakness/"needing
to understand something" [astheneia]
and
in/by/with fear [kai en phobia]
and
in/by/with much [kai en polus]
trembling/"anxiety
that he could not complete his duties". [tromos]
[Note:
For the first time in his life, Paul was becoming unsure of himself
and it bothered him. He came to understand that even he needed to
rely on the power of God and that is coming up next.]
4~~And/Both
[kai]
my
words/speech/doctrine
[logos - the Word - the delivery and content in view]
and
my delivery/preaching/proclamation [kerugma]
absolutely
not [ouk]
in/by/with
[en]
enticing/persuasive
[peithos]
words/speach/doctrine
[logos]
of
man's wisdom/"human viewpoint",
[anthropinos sophia - human
viewpoint thinking as a "lesser
thing" than what power Paul did use]
but,
in contrast, [alla]
in/by/with
[en]
demonstration/"making
manifest"/proof [apodeixis]
of
the Spirit [pneuma]
and
of "inherent power"/"inner strength" [kai dunamis].
[Note:
A common theme of the New Testament is that Jesus was our prototype
of what believers in Him are supposed "to think" and how
"to apply" that Divine Viewpoint in living our lives. He
did not sin and remained in fellowship until the cross. He operated
under the guidance and power of God the Holy Spirit and we are to
imitate Him. And, since we sin, He also has given us I
John 1:9 to recover fellowship. We are to use I John 1:9 habitually.]
5~~"For
the purpose that"/With the result that" [hina]
your
faith [pistis - the active use]
should
not be in/by/with [en]
the
"human viewpoint thinking"/wisdom [sophia]
of
men, [anthropos]
but,
in contrast, [alla]
in/by/with
[en ]
the
"inherent power"/strength of God. [dunamis Theos]
[Note:
The objective of followers of the Way is to replace the human
viewpoint opinions that we all have absorbed all our lives with
Divine Viewpoint of God as explained and demonstrated by Jesus. As we
study the Mind of Christ, His norms and standards are absorbed into
the conscience of the soul. When we are in fellowship and allow His
Thinking to operate through us, Christ lives through us.]
nor
to the leaders of this world . . .
who
are fading out.
6a~~
Howbeit/But [de]
we
communicate/"use words to convey thought" [laleo]
"Divine
Viewpoint thinking"/wisdom [sophia]
in/by/with/among
[en]
"mature
believers"/adults/"completed ones"
[teleios
- means to be complete. But only Jesus was a perfect
human. The three stages of spiritual maturity are baby, teenage,
and adult. Paul is communicating doctrine to those who are
mature.]
6b~~Howbeit/But
[de]
absolutely
not [ouk]
the
"human viewpoint thinking"/wisdom [sophia]
of
this age [toutou aion]
nor
to the leaders/princes [oude archon]
of
this age [toutou aion]
"who
are fading out"/ceasing. [katargeo - present passive participle]
7a~~But,
in contrast, [alla]
we
communicate/"use words to convey thought" [laleo]
"Divine
Viewpoint thinking"/wisdom [sophia]
of
God [Theos]
in/by/with
[en] a mystery,
which
has been concealed in the past with results
that
[until now] had lasted forever.
[apokrupto - perfect passive participle]
7b~~Which
[mystery doctrine] [hos]
the
God [Theos]
pre-designed/foreordained/"decided
beforehand" [proorizo]
before
the Ages . . . [pro aion]
toward/into/"resulting
in" [eis]
our
glory/"exalted state"/"thing belonging to God".
[hemon doxa]
[Note:
All Church Age was a mystery to the Old Testament believers. Even
today, many people believe in God and try to live by the teaching of
the Old Testament scriptures. Without accepting Jesus, they are not
in union with the Son and all His Teaching and explaining the meaning
of the scriptures remain a mystery to them.]
8a~~Which
[mystery doctrine] [hos]
none
of the rulers/princes of this age
[oudeis archon toutou aion]
knew
by study or observation with results that last forever.
[ginosko - perfect active indicative]
8b~~For
if - but it is not true-
[ei gar - literally "if for" but is our "For if" -
beginning of 2nd Class conditional if]
they
had known [ginosko]
they
absolutely would not [ouk]
have
crucified [stauroo - aorist active indicative]
"the
Lord of Glory"/
"the
Lord of The Exalted State"/
"the
Lord of That Which belongs to God". [Kurios Doxa]
[Note:
All meanings of doxa apply to Jesus Christ. He belongs to God. He is
the Lord of Glory. And He is the Most Exalted One.]
9~~
But, in contrast, [alla] [quoting Isaiah 64:4]
"as
it is written with the result that it remains written forever,
[kathos grapho - perfect passive indicative]":
"Things
which the eye
has
absolutely not [ouk] seen
[oida - means to understand or perceive]
and
[kai]
the
ear has absolutely not [ouk] heard
[two examples of "perception by empiricism"]
and
[kai]
which
have absolutely not [ouk]
entered
the "right lobe"/heart [kardia]
of
man [anthropos - non-noble form of mankind] . . .
all
that God has prepared [Theos hetoimazo]
for
those 'agape loving' Him." [agapao autos]
[Note:
Agape is the form of love based on who and what you are with no
regard for the righteousness of the object of your love.]
10a~~Howbeit/Moreover
[de]
God
has revealed them [apokalupto]
[His Plans for those who love Him - "what He has prepared"]
[unto]
us
"through
the instrumentality of"/"by means of" [dia]
His
Spirit. [autos pneuma]
10b~~For
[gar]
the
Spirit investigates all things, [ereunao pas]
yes/and,
[kai]
the
"height"/"depth"/"deep things" [ereunao]
of
God.
[Note:
After salvation, our success in God's plan means for us to apply our
Faith to "Faith in Jesus' doctrines" - the Bible is the
Mind of Christ. We do that through study . . . the intake of Bible
doctrine. Then God the Holy Spirit will make real to us the Truth and
we can grow. The final step is to then apply doctrine in the soul to
life's experiences. Then, since it is His Thinking, Jesus lives
through us!]
11a~~For
[gar]
what
man [tis anthropos]
"understands
with results that last forever"
[eido - perfect active indicative]
the
things of man . . . [ho anthropos]
except/"if
not" [ei me]
the
spirit of man [pneuma anthropos]
which
is in him?
[Note:
This means all men are from the earth and understand the earthly
things through experience. But there is a failure of this rationalism
to understand spirituality - they have no frame of reference.]
11b~~"Even
so"/likewise/and [kai]
the
things of God . . . [ho Theos]
no
one [oudeis]
"understands
with results that last forever"
[eido - perfect active indicative]
except/"if
not" [ei me]
the
spirit of God [pneuma Theos].
{Note:
Verse 10a says spiritual things are revealed through the
instrumentality of the Spirit. Without a "spirit",
unbelievers find spiritual things as "foolishness" - they
just do not understand.]
12a~~Now/Howbeit
[de]
we
have absolutely not [ouk] received [lambano]
the
spirit of the world [pneuma kosmos].
{referring to the "World's frame of reference" - what
Paul calls "sarx thinking" - the thinking of the flesh -
or "human viewpoint thinking"}
12b~~But,
in contrast, [alla]
the
spirit which is "out from the source of" [ek] God,
for
the purpose that [hina]
we
might know with the result that we know forever
[oida - perfect active subjunctive]
"the
things being freely given by grace (no strings attached)"
[charizomai - charis is "grace" - this is "grace given"
aorist passive participle]
to
us [hemin]
by/"under
[the principle of grace]" [hupo]
God.
{Mechanics
of studying and learning Bible doctrine}
13a~~Which
things [hos]
["Divine Viewpoint thinking/wisdom"]
also
[kai]
we
speak {Paul's teaching},
absolutely
not [ouk]
in
words/categories [logos]
taught
by human viewpoint thinking/wisdom.
[didaktos anthropinos sophia]
13b~~But
in contrast [alla]
that
taught by the Holy Spirit
[didaktos Hagios Pneuma]
explaining/interpreting/"putting
together"/comparing [sugkrino]
"spiritual
doctrines" [with] spiritual doctrines".
[pneumatikos pneumatikos]
[Note:
The bible only has one method stated of how to study Itself. See Isaiah
28:10 - line upon line, precept upon precept, a little here and
a little there - building and comparing one doctrine with another.]
14a~~Howbeit
[de]
the
"psuchikos man"/"soul-ish man"
[psuchikos - the breath/"immaterial substance" that men
have in common with animals - a unbeliever with only a soul]
absolutely
does not [ouk]
"receive
to himself"/accept
[dechomai - Present middle indicative]
the
things of the Spirit of God [ho pneuma Theos].
14b~~For
[gar]
they
are foolishness to him. [moria autos]
14c~~And
[kai]
he
absolutely is not [ouk]
able/"has
received the power himself"
[dunamai - middle passive indicative]
to
obtain knowledge [ginosko - aorist active infinitive]
[of
spiritual matters - "Divine Viewpoint type wisdom"] . . .
because
[hoti]
they
are discerned/determined/examined/judged [anakrino]
from
the source of the spirit [pneumatikos].
{Perceptive
ability of the spirit filled person}
15a~~Howbeit
[de]
he
that is spiritual [pneumatikos]
truly
discerns [men anakrino]
'The
all things'. [pas]
[spiritual matters - the things of God - Doctrine
"Divine Viewpoint thinking/wisdom]
15b~~Howbeit
[de]
he
himself [autos]
is
judged [anakrino - present passive indicative]
by/under
[hupo]
no
one [oudeis].
[Note;
Means that someone without Divine Viewpoint thinking is equipped to
judge someone with Divine Viewpoint thinking. This becomes important
particularly since apparently believers of the day were taking
disputes to the courts and were being judged by potentially by unbelievers.]
[Conclusion]
16a~~For,
[gar]
who
has known [ginosko - aorist active indicative]
the
mind/thinking of the Lord . . . [nous kurios]
[Divine Viewpoint thinking/wisdom]?
16b~~That
[hos]
he
can instruct Him?
[sumbibazo - future active indicative]
16c~~Howbeit
[de]
we
have [hemeis echo - present active indicative]
the
thinking/mind of Christ.
[nous Christos]
[Note:
The doctrines of Jesus Christ are throughout the Bible. The Bible is
the Mind of Christ. "In the beginning was the Word (Divine
Viewpoint Thinking/Wisdom) and the Word was made flesh".]
