6 (Continued)
{Note: Verses 13-14 is the introduction to the next section of Corinthians. Remember, Paul was addressing this epistle to a specific people- the GREEKS.}
{Note:
Homer described the Greeks as tall, fair, blond, blue eyed, and
ox-eating people. The unbelieving Greeks thought you had to BEAT the
human body for salvation through one of 2 methods:
1)
either starve it (asceticism), or
2)
gorge it (lasciviousness).
Paul
had to discuss 3 problems with the Greeks:
1) Eating is normal,
2) Sex is normal, and
3) The "body" has a future in eternity
(Plato told the Greeks that the body is evil and will be left
behind).}
13a~~Food
is for the stomach,
and
the stomach is for food.
13b~~But
God shall destroy both it {the stomach}
and
them {those who eat - human race}.
{Note: Eating is permitted and necessary. The subject of eating is now held until Chapter 8.}
13c~~Now
the body [soma] is absolutely not [ouk]
[for]
fornication/"sex in connection with idolatry" {porneia}.
13d~~But,
in contrast [alla]
{the
body is for the} . . . Lord.
13e~~And, the Lord . . . [is for the] body [soma].
{Note: Paul now moves on to the subject of sex. And here, 'porneia' is a very important technical term. In the Greek language, porneia referred specifically to sex in a heathen temple. Porneia means having sex with an unbeliever in connection with idolatry. And, that is what is in context here.}
14~~
And God has both raised up the Lord,
and
will also raise up us by means of His own power.
[Note: There is no "picking and choosing" in the doctrines in which you believe. The Greeks could not grow in spiritual maturity if they had the mind set of only accepting what "fit" with the human viewpoint already in their souls. They needed to get beyond Plato's teaching of the human body to "absolutely accept as Truth" the resurrection of Jesus - and from there . . . their own resurrection. And, please note, these Corinthians are already saved. This is not a salvation message. Paul is trying to teach these Greeks how to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (the Bible is the Mind of Christ). And, that is also why a teknon needs to understand the "basic doctrines" first. They are the foundation. Then learn "teenager doctrine". Finally, they can learn mature doctrine and become "fathers". See Isaiah 28:10.]
{Note: Problem with sex is the subject of the rest of Chapter 6 and Chapter 7. In Greek culture, fornication - sex in the temple as a form of worship to the Greek gods - was as normal an activity as eating.
All kinds of perversion (satisfying the lusts of the flesh) went on in the temple . . . bestiality, homosexuality, group sex, etc. Greek worship was centered on sex. The Corinthians were saved but they kept going back into the heathen temples for their great food, liquor and unlimited sex.}

Once you believe in Christ, God places you in union with
Him
. . . as a gift (future bride) to Him. You share all that He is and
all that He has. Paul will go on to explain that the believers in
Christ before death are the "body of Christ". We need to
work together like a human body works. Some of us are eyes. Others
are feet. Another . . . the brain on and on. We each need each other
to operate properly and effectively.]

make them the members
of
a temple priestess/prostitute [porne]?

[Note: The KJV translator translated this into his own idiom of the day and made it "God forbid". Both express the original idea, but I like the original as well so I will use it.]

[Note: Sex is a union of two bodies. Therefore sex with a heathen priest or priestess is a union of the heathen with the 'Body of Christ'. You sin against your own "human body" and against all believers in Christ - the "Body of Christ".]

your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit . . . in you!
19c~~Which
you keep on having
from
the ultimate source of [apo] God?
19d~~And you are absolutely not [ouk] your own?
20a~~For you are bought with a price!
[Note: You were in the slave market of sin. You had no capability to purchase your own freedom. Jesus paid that price as a substitute for you and "paid the price". You belong to Him!]
20b~~Therefore, glorify God in your body.
[Note: Joining your body with any unbeliever does not glorify God. Marry a believer in Christ and stay faithful to your spouse mentally and physically (confess your sin to God (I John 1:9) if you fail in this and try to do better in the future. Remember that He always has known that humans are imperfect and will fail (I John 1:9 is not a license to sin - that is how a baby would look at it). I John 1:9 reveals to us the mechanics for recovery from sin for any Royal Priest!]
