REVELATION
Chapter
1 (Continued)
13~~And
in the middle of the lampstands,
I
saw one resembling the Son of Man
{a title for Jesus - son of David)},
being
attired in a robe reaching down to His feet
{a robe of a High Priest - poderes}, and
having
belted on {the robe} a golden sash
across
the chest {sign of aristocracy}.
{Note: Poderes literally means a garment going down to the foot, which was the uniform worn by a high priest. The golden sash speaks of authority.}
14~~Moreover,
His head and His hairs
{were}
white like wool {thick}
as
white as snow and
His
eyes . . . {were} like a flame of fire.
{Note: All beauty in the ancient world was based on the Head and the feet and symmetry. The white hair represents 'past judgment'. It reflects the shock of His bearing our sins on the cross. We know from I John 3 that His resurrected body appears as a 33-year-old man and all of our resurrected bodies will be as that of a 33-year-old. The eyes represent future judgement.}
{Note: His eyes of fire represents Jesus as the judge of all humanity (John 5:23) - personal judgement (national judgment will be later).}
15~~And
His feet . . .
{were}
like bronze when it being refined in a furnace
{the furnace of National discipline/judgment - removes impurities}.
And
His voice . . .
{was}
like the sound of many waters
{the screams of attacking armies or the Lord Himself coming to
destroy - judgement through military disaster}.
{Note: What we call national judgement can also be called 'historical trends'. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin and is used often in the bible representing 5th Cycle of discipline and the servitude of a nation. Lamentations 3:6-8 and II Kings 25:7. It also represents economic discipline of a nation - Deuteronomy 28:23-25 and Leviticus 26:19}
{Note: See Ezekiel 1:24 and 43:2 for more on the use of 'sound of many waters' - 1st verse is used for an army the second verse for the coming of the Lord to destroy the city.}
{Note: There are two types of deliverances of the Lord. He delivers us FROM disaster so we are never in it. And, He delivers us OUT OF a disaster once we get into the mess.}
16~~And
having in His {Jesus} right hand
seven
stars {7 future pastors teaching doctrine} and
a
sharp double-edged broadsword {rhomphaia}
came
out of His mouth
{grace precedes judgement - doctrine comes first - if doctrine is
rejected, then comes divine judgement - here crime, violence,
terrorism or military disaster} and
like
the sun
His
overt/outward appearance
shines
in His power.
{Note: This is Christ's 17th recorded appearance in Resurrected Body - the next time He will be seen will be in the air at the rapture - then on earth again at the end of the Tribulation in the 2nd Advent}.
{Note: In verse 20 we find the seven stars are the 7 preachers who will take over John's churches when he is gone. Stars give off light. Pastors give light (the Word) to their congregations. The right hand is the 'hand of approval'. So only those pastors who give correct doctrine are 'stars' and they are delegated the authority over the congregation by the Lord Jesus Christ.}
{Note: Machaira is the word for a short two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12) and represents the Word of God. If you reject the Word of God (machaira), then you get the hacking broadsword (rhomphaia) . . . or the sword of divine judgment.}
{The
Resurrected Christ identifies Himself}
17-18~~And
when I had seen Him,
I
fainted {idiom - literally 'I fell at his feet as dead'}.
Then
He placed His right hand on me {assurance}, saying,
"Stop
being afraid/awed,
I
am the First {as deity always existed} and
the
Last {Hypostatic Union as He will be forever} 18~~ and,
The
Living One {1st Advent} and
I
became dead {nekros} and
BEHOLD
. . . I
AM ALIVE FOREVER,
furthermore,
I {Jesus} have the keys {plural} of death and Hades."
{Note: John had seen the resurrected Christ on four occasions. He fainted because of an emotional reaction to all the great things he was being taught.}
{Note: Every human has free will. Each has a 'key' to get into heaven - belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. God the Father appointed Jesus the final judge. If you do not accept the substitutionary work of Jesus on the Cross, then Jesus holds the key to your fate.}
{Note: The Greek word for spiritual death is 'thanatos'. Physical death is nekros. Both were applicable to the cross. The physical death is in view here.}
19~~"Therefore,
write what you are about to see . . .
both
what is
{historical trends in the Church Age - Revelation chapters 2-3} . .
. and what shall occur after these."
{Note: The last part here is literally - 'what is about to be come to pass after these (historical trends)'. It refers to the prophecy of what occurs after the Rapture of the Church - the end of the Church Age - the Remainder of Revelation.}
20~~"The
mystery {anything happening in the Church Age}
of
the seven stars
which
you have seen on My right {idiom for 'in my right hand'}, and
the
seven golden lampstands . . .
the
seven stars
ARE
the messengers/ministers
of
the seven churches . . . and
the
seven lampstands
are
the seven churches."
{Note: Aggelos is the word for angels but really means someone carrying a message or a messenger. Here it refers to pastors carrying the Word of God to the congregations of the seven Churches. A star gives light - communication of the Word. And, the star needs a place to shine or a classroom - the local church.}
